Description

No. 38 Stonegate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and incorporates earlier structures, with alterations and extensions made in the early and mid-19th century, as well as later changes. The front block features incised render, while the rear is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond. The timber-framed wings at the back are encased in brick. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, pantiles, and slate, and there is a brick stack.

The exterior is three stories high with a two-window front. The shopfront is framed by sunk-panelled pilasters and features foliate scrolled brackets at the top. It includes a four-light plate glass window and a glazed shop door to the left. To the right, there are paired entrances leading to a subdivided passage; one entrance is closed off by an iron grille, while the other has a 20th-century door beneath a decorated overlight. The first-floor windows are shallow canted bays with plate glass lights, framed in sunk-panelled pilasters with moulded capitals and cornices. On the second floor, there are 12-pane sash windows set in shallow architraves with bracketed sills. A plain parapet conceals the roof, and there is a broad raised band at the second floor, interrupted by the first-floor bay windows.

On the right return, beyond the passageway, there is a pilaster doorcase with a pediment supported by grooved brackets, leading to a recessed door with six sunk panels beneath a divided overlight. Inside, a winder staircase leads to the first floor, featuring symmetrically turned balusters and a serpentine handrail that is wreathed at the foot on a turned newel and shaped curtain step.
