Description
32 Stonegate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent alterations and extensions at the rear in the late 19th century, with a new shop window added in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of orange-grey brick in Flemish bond, featuring a timber cornice and brick stacks on a pantile roof.
The exterior has three storeys and a two-window front. The shopfront consists of three arcaded plate glass lights, which include a door at the right end and a round passage arch on shaped imposts further to the right. The first floor has 16-pane sash windows, while the second floor features 6-pane casement windows, all with painted sills and flat arches made of orange gauged brick. The eaves cornice is moulded and modillioned.
Inside, there is a cantilevered dogleg staircase with lower flights that have stone treads with concave undersides, while the upper flights are wooden. The cast-iron balusters are square in section and hollow sided on the lower flights, with a handrail that ramps up and is wreathed at the foot on a shaped curtail step. In the front room on the first floor, there are hemi-domed niches flanking the chimney breast.
