Description

Two shops, dating to the early 17th century, with an 18th-century wing to number 24. The front range was remodelled and refaced in the mid-18th century, and has a late 19th-century shopfront, which has been altered. The construction is timber-framed, with a front facade of orange-grey brick in Flemish bond and a timber cornice. The rear features timber framing and various brickwork, some of which is rendered, with pantiled roofs of two parallel hipped ranges at the front and gabled ranges at the rear, and brick stacks.

The front of the building presents a three-storey, three-bay facade. The shopfronts are framed by pilasters with acanthus consoles above the doorheads, a plain frieze, and a dentilled cornice. There is a passage entry at the left end. Number 22 has a glazed and panelled door to the right, which curves to accommodate the passage entrance. Number 24 has a recessed door and plate glass window. The first floor has one 16-pane sash window in number 22, and two 1-pane sashes in number 24. On the second floor, number 22 has an unequal 12-pane sash, and number 24 has two 20th-century cross windows. All windows have flat arches of orange gauged brick; the second-floor windows have painted stone sills above a four-course raised brick band.

The rear of the building is three stories high, with two gabled bays. A lower timber-framed and gabled wing extends from the rear of number 22, and there are two largely rebuilt, parallel wings to number 24. Exposed timber framing is visible on the gables at the rear of number 24 and on the wing to number 22. Number 22 has two-light Yorkshire sashes with 4- or 6-pane lights, as well as one small bordered fixed light. Number 24 has one 16-pane sash at the rear of the front range, with the remaining windows being 20th-century replacements.

The interior of number 22 has been altered. An altered staircase features splat balusters of a bulbous profile between the first and second floors. Extensive timber framing is visible on both the first and second floors. The front room on the first floor has a hob grate with a triglyph frieze and dentilled moulded cornice shelf; the rear room has a plain corner fireplace with a hob grate. The second floor includes run-through panelling and a variety of two-panel and plank doors. The interior of number 24 was not inspected. Historical records indicate the framing includes studs and thin straight braces.
