Description

No. 16 Stonegate is a former house, now a shop, dating from the early 17th century. It has been raised, extended, and altered, with a 19th-century shopfront. The building features a timber frame that is plastered at the front, complemented by a timber cornice and shopfront. The rear is constructed of orange-beige brick in stretcher bond, topped with a pantile roof and a brick stack.

The exterior is three stories high with a one-bay front, and the first floor jetties out. The shopfront, located beneath a cased jetty bressumer, includes a two-light window above a panelled riser, a glazed shop door with an overlight to the right, and a passageway entrance further to the right. The first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes with timber sills, and there is a dentilled and modillioned eaves cornice.

At the rear, the building also has three stories and one bay. A timber lintel marks the passageway, while the first floor features a 12-pane casement window with a one-course segmental brick arch. The second floor has a 20th-century tripartite window with small pane glazing. Some remnants of timber framing can be seen in the passageway and the rear wall. The interior includes an early 19th-century stick baluster staircase, as recorded by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
