Description

This is a mid-18th century house, later altered in the early 19th century, and renovated in the late 20th century, now used as a shop. It is located in Stonegate, York. The front of the building is constructed of orange-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a brick eaves parapet topped with stone capping and brick gable copings over a plain tile roof. A red brick wing extends to the rear. The shopfront features pilasters, a moulded impost beneath a sunk-panel frieze and dentilled cornice, and a segmental pediment. The entrance has paired 6-panel doors with fanlights, flanked by plate glass windows with an arcaded design. The first floor has a shallow tripartite bow window with three 12-pane sashes and a fluted frieze on the left, and a 16-pane sash with a gauged brick arch on the right. Second floor windows are also 12-pane sashes with similar arches. Raised brick bands mark the sill level on the first floor and painted stone sills feature on the second floor. The rear elevation has three bays over three storeys, with a two-storey three-bay wing projecting to the left. A glazed extension replaces part of the ground floor, and the first floor window mirrors the front's bow window design. The second floor has three 12-pane sashes with painted sills and brick arches. Returns on either side have raised brick bands which continue onto the rear elevations. An inverted bell rainwater head is visible on the right return. The interior of the main house retains a principal staircase with turned and twisted balusters, a swept handrail, and a moulded dado rail. Radial glazing remains from the staircase window, now altered for access to the rear wing. A secondary staircase leads to the attic, with close string, turned balusters, and a flat moulded handrail. Cornices are present on the first-floor landing and in the rooms. A segmental arch sits above the stair head, supported by plain pilasters. One front room has a duck-nest grate in a reeded fireplace surround with angle rosettes, while the back room features a plain fireplace with a moulded shelf. The rear wing has a ground floor room with raised moulded panelling, and first floor fireplaces with painted stone surrounds, one containing a hob grate and the other round-headed.
