Description

This is a mid-18th century house, remodelled in the early 19th century, located on Stonegate in York. It is now used as two shops. The front section of the building has undergone significant alterations in the late 20th century, while the rear section originally dates back to the 18th century.

The front facade is constructed of orange brick in a Flemish bond pattern, topped with a timber cornice. The shopfronts and doorcases are timber, richly ornamented with composition details. A wide doorcase, incorporating three entrances, features plain pilasters with acanthus leaves, an elaborate frieze, and a flat cornice supported by block consoles decorated with masks. The central shop door is glazed and has a slatted vent and patterned fanlight above. The flanking doors are panelled, each with a similar vent and fanlight. A bow-fronted shop window to the right has four plate-glass lights between moulded mullions. An iron grille is situated within the basement. The shopfront to the left continues the design from the adjacent property. The upper-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and flat, gauged brick arches with triple keyblocks. A prominent dentil and modillion eaves cornice completes the exterior. The rear of the building is constructed of red brick in a stretcher bond pattern, with a plain tiled roof and brick stacks. It features a four-pane sash window on the first floor and a 12-pane sash window on the second floor, both with segmental brick arches. Both side returns have two four-pane Yorkshire sashes in the gable ends.

The interior features a cellar with an early 19th-century kitchen range in a back room. On the ground floor, a moulded round arch on pilasters with moulded imposts leads to a former stairhall. A dogleg staircase rises to the attics, with two turned balusters to each stair, a bulbous turned newel at the foot, and a ramped-up moulded handrail. The bottom flight is enclosed by raised and fielded panelling, and the stairwell is fitted with a matching dado rail and moulded skirting. The first floor contains a larger front room with a carved window surround including egg-and-dart detailing, moulded dado rail, and a dentilled cornice. The second floor retains original stone fireplaces in all rooms, with pulvinated friezes and flat shelves. The larger front room has a round-headed firegrate, a simple coved cornice, and a six-panel cupboard door with H-L hinges. A smaller front room features an early 19th-century basket grate, while a rear room has a six-panel cupboard door also with H-L hinges.

The attics contain a two-panel door with plank backing on L hinges, and another door composed of six incised panels on plank backing. The front part of the attic has two corner fireplaces, one with a basket grate in a plain surround, and one round-headed with a flat shelf in cast iron. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are also present.
