Description
No. 8 Stonegate is a house and shop located in York, originally known as No. 55 Stonegate. It dates from the early 17th century and was remodeled around 1830, with a later 19th-century extension and shopfront added. The building features a timber frame with a stucco front and painted stone dressings, topped by a slate roof.
The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a one-window gabled front that includes a cased first-floor jetty. The shopfront is framed by pilasters and has a frieze of billets, along with a projecting moulded cornice that is panelled on the underside. To the right of the shopfront, there is a glazed door next to a three-light window with chamfered ogee-stopped mullions.
The first and second floor windows are paired narrow sashes with shouldered heads set in moulded architraves, while the attic window is pointed and has Gothick glazing in a similar architrave. A moulded sill band is present on the second floor, and there is a moulded cornice beneath the attic.
The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that timber-framing is visible on the second floor, featuring thin, widely spaced studs with straight braces. The first floor has ovolo-moulded ceiling beams.
