Description
No. 6 Stonegate is a former house and shop, now used as business premises. It dates from the early 17th century, with an early 18th-century extension. The building was refronted and had its windows changed in the early 19th century, and it was reroofed in the late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed with an incised stucco front and features a timber shopfront. The roof is covered with pantiles and has shaped timber bargeboards.
The building has three storeys and an attic, with one gabled bay that has a jettied first floor. To the right of the entrance is a glazed and panelled door next to a two-light shop window in a plain surround. The upper floors feature tripartite sash windows that decrease in height on each level.
Inside, remnants of the timber frame can be seen in the partition wall on the second floor of the front block, and the ceiling beams are chamfered. The ground floor room of the rear block retains a quarter-round moulded spine beam and an altered fireplace with panelled alcove cupboard doors.
