Description

No. 3 Stonegate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century, with an early 19th-century doorcase and some 20th-century alterations and renovations. The building is constructed of brown brick, featuring a Flemish bond front and a stretcher bond rear, with red brick dressings, a timber eaves cornice, and a shopfront made of cast iron and timber. The roof is slate, topped with a flat dormer and brick stacks.

The exterior has three storeys and an attic, with a three-bay front. There are steps leading up to a six-panel door that is set behind a glazed outer door with a radial fanlight. This door is framed by a doorcase featuring fluted half-elliptical columns with acanthus leaf capitals, which are also replicated in the arcaded shop window to the left, all beneath a plain cornice. The first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes, each with flat brick arches and narrow painted sills on the first floor. A five-course raised band is located beneath the second floor, and there is a heavy moulded eaves cornice.

At the rear, the staircase windows are unequal 9-pane and 12-pane sashes with one-course segmental brick arches and a four-course raised brick band.

Inside, a moulded segmental arch on imposts leads to the stair hall. The quarter-turn staircase from the ground to the second floor features a close string, column balusters, square newels with attached half balusters, and a column bottom newel. The handrail and stairwell skirting are moulded and ramped up, although the top flight appears to have been replaced. The first-floor front room has been subdivided but retains a carved fireplace with a garlanded centre panel set between arabesques, along with a plaster ceiling cornice enriched with egg-and-dart mouldings.
