Description
Nos. 4 and 4A Stonegate is a house and shop, currently functioning as a shop and hairdressing salon. It dates from the early 17th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is timber-framed with an incised stucco front and a plain tile roof.
The exterior features three storeys and an attic, with a one-window gabled front and jettied first and second floors. The ground floor includes a three-light small-pane shop window framed by sunk-panelled pilasters, with a margin-glazed and panelled door to the left and a similar door upstairs to the right, both adorned with patterned fanlights. The first floor showcases a three-light canted bay window with 12-pane sashes, while the second floor and attic feature tripartite windows with 12-pane centre sashes.
Inside, the timber-framing is visible on the second floor. The front room on the second floor has a blocked bolection moulded fireplace, and a similar fireplace from the first floor room is said to be stored in the attic.
