Description

Nos. 3, 3A, 4, and 5A in St Peter's Square are shops and dwellings, currently used as a shop and hairdresser's, dating from the mid-18th century. The building is constructed of stucco and brick, topped with a Welsh slate roof that features two ridge lines. It has an axial stack at the left rear and a composite end stack on the right. The structure is three storeys high, with an attic and cellar, and has a five-window range. The windows include 18th-century 6/6 sashes under gauged brick flat arches, with segmental arches on the right, and 6/3 sashes on the left. There are storeybands, a moulded wood eaves-cornice, and a roof dormer with a 5/2 sash.

The ground floor is finished in stucco, with entrances on the left. No. 3/3A features an 18th-century five-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars, set in a moulded case with a simple flat hood. No. 4 has a late 19th-century four-panel door with an 18th-century fanlight, flanked by paired round-headed shop windows, all beneath joined moulded drip-courses.

Inside, the building has a late 18th-century or early 19th-century dogleg staircase with turned balusters and a moulded string and rail leading from the first to the second floor. The second floor includes a 19th-century corner fireplace, a four-panel door, two 18th-century two-panel doors, probable framing, and 18th-century panelling. The first floor features 17th-century and 18th-century panelling, a late 19th-century range, two two-panel doors, a four-panel door, a wall cupboard, and an early 19th-century tiled firegrate with a marble surround. The ground floor has wood panelling, coving, and architraves. The cellar is stone-lined with much dressed stone. The rear wing has massive trusses and ceiling beams, with exposed framing on the north side, two-panel doors, a wall cupboard, panelling, and a tiled floor.
