Description
No. 8 St Owen Street is a house, now used as offices, dating from the 18th century. It is built of brick and features a slate roof, with two 20th-century reduced brick axial stacks at the rear. The building has a lobby entrance plan and stands three storeys high with a cellar, presenting a five-window range. The late 19th-century plain sashes are set beneath gauged brick cambered flat arches, with 2/2 sashes above. A brick modillioned cornice supports a tile-coped parapet. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with an overlight and a screen, which is recessed under a painted stone hood, topped with a 20th-century balcony guard on Doric columns. The left side features terracotta quoins.
Inside, there is an early 19th-century dogleg staircase with turned newels and balusters, and a swan neck rail leading to the second floor. The hall and dado are panelled. On the second floor, there are four-panel and six-panel doors. The first floor has architraves around the doors and windows, an early 19th-century fireplace, and a ceiling cornice. The ground floor includes a six-panel door, later panelled beams, an arch, and cornice, along with a ceiling cornice. The cellar is lined with stone and brick, has a flagstone floor, and features brick bins.
