Description
The Town Hall in Hereford was built around 1904 by architect HA Cheers and constructed by builder WJ Bowers. It features a combination of terracotta and brick with a slate roof. The building has a central staircase plan and is symmetrical with two storeys and a seven-window range. The central section includes three mullion and transom lights, flanked by four-light windows and canted bays, all adorned with leaded lights, moulded cases, sills, and transoms. Above the central doorway, which is framed by rusticated pillars and a round-headed arch, there is a prominent round-headed hood. To the left and right of the doorway are rusticated round-headed openings, with one providing access to the rear of the building.
The design includes three two-storey mullioned tripartite windows with round heads and canted oriel windows beneath domed angle towers. A large central gable displays a civic crest and oculus, topped with balustrading. The exterior is richly ornamented with banding, pilasters, finials, scrollwork, and figures. An elaborate wooden lantern with columns, a dome, and a flagpole enhances the building's grandeur, along with ornamental iron gates featuring a balcony and railings. At the rear, there are Diocletian windows with civic crests.
Inside, the Town Hall is noted for its rich interior, featuring an Empire staircase and marble columns that support enriched plasterwork ceilings. The Council Chambers and Great Hall are particularly significant spaces within the building.
