Description

This is a mid-18th century building, originally two houses, now adapted for use as a hotel and offices. It is located on the north side of St Owen Street, Hereford. The building is of brick construction with a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate, and a plain tile roof to the right, with a central brick ridge stack. The plan is in an "E" shape.

The building presents three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a symmetrical six-window front. To the left are three deeper windows with 6/9 sashes, and three smaller 6/6 sashes, all set within moulded brick surrounds with gauged brick segmental arches. A storey band runs above the ground floor, followed by another rendered band. A 20th-century parapet tops the front. A brick gable dormer has two, three-light casement windows with simple hoods. The front entrances, one to the left and one to the right, each have a six-panel door. The left door has a plain overlight, while the right door features a swagged fanlight, both set beneath moulded pediment hoods supported by consoles and pilasters. The basement windows are four-light casements. Original 18th-century rainwater goods are still present. The bricks are engraved with "SPP" and "SOP".

Attached to the front are 18th-century railings with spearhead finials.

The interior of No.19 retains a dogleg staircase with a moulded string and rail, turned balusters, a newel post, and panelling. The second floor has a later 19th-century cast-iron fireplace, an 18th-century two-panel door, and plank doors. The first floor has a mix of two-panel, eight-panel doors, some panelling, and several 19th-century fireplaces. The ground floor features panelling, a glazed and panelled screen, various fireplaces (including an 18th-century example with a stone surround), and ceiling cornices. A cellar contains a late 19th-century range, a wood mantel, a plank door, an alcove, and six-panel doors.

No.21 also has a dogleg staircase with similar detailing to No.19. The attic contains a 19th-century fireplace and both 19th and 18th-century six and eight-panel doors. The second floor has three two-panel doors, panelled window risers, moulded architraves, skirting, and a 19th-century four-panel double door, plus wall cupboards and fireplaces. The first floor is panelled throughout with a dado and cornice, with two 19th-century fireplaces, one tiled, wall cupboards, double doors with an architrave, and window shutters to the rear. The ground floor is also extensively panelled, with wall and corner cupboards, window shutters to the front and rear, two 19th-century fireplaces, eight-panel doors, a half-glazed 19th-century door to the rear wing (which includes 19th-century panelling), and a four-panel door. The hall is panelled and features a part-glazed panelled door and fanlight to the stairwell. The cellar is predominantly stone-lined and contains three plank doors.
