Description
This is a substantial timber-framed building complex dating primarily to the early 15th century, with significant additions and alterations across the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It occupies a prominent corner site on Stonegate and Little Stonegate in York.
The original structure comprised a front range dating to the early 15th century, with a parallel rear range constructed around 1600. A further 15th-century range extends to Little Stonegate, heightened in the early 17th century. The frontages were refronted and given new shopfronts around 1800. All elements are timber-framed and plastered, with timber shopfronts and an eaves cornice, and roofs covered in tiles and pantiles, with brick stacks.
The Stonegate frontage has three storeys and three bays. The central bay features a glazed and panelled door with a radial fanlight and a three-light bow window with a moulded cornice. To the right, a blocked door sits below a fanlight, leading to a former window altered into a glazed and sunk-panel door. The left bay incorporates a shopfront with double doors, glazed upper halves, and a dentilled cornice, alongside a small-pane canted bay window. First-floor windows are tripartite with 12-pane sashes, while the second floor has 12-pane Yorkshire sashes, one of which is blind. The Little Stonegate frontage returns with a 32-pane shop window on the ground floor, a margin-glazed fixed light above, and a 12-pane sash window to the second floor. A gabled range on Little Stonegate features a door with a radial fanlight and a tripartite shop window. The ground floor openings are framed with fluted details and a plain frieze block, while the windows have moulded cornices. First floor windows are sashes with two unequal lights, and the second floor features one 12-pane sash and one 4-pane sash. A corner dragon post has been cut away to reveal a 17th-century mermaid figurehead.
The interior of the Stonegate range on the ground floor incorporates a reset Roman Doric portico with fluted columns and an entablature. The rear range contains a mid-18th-century staircase with a close string, turned balusters, square newels with attached half balusters, and a moulded handrail, alongside a winder staircase with stick balusters and a ramped-up handrail. A handsome marble fireplace with a fluted shelf on ornate brackets and tiled side pieces is also present. The Little Stonegate range includes a steep newel staircase with stick balusters and a fine stone fireplace with panelled jambs, moulded imposts, a flat arched lintel, and a carved keyblock.
