Description

Mulberry Hall is a historic building located on Stonegate in York, originally known as Nos. 13, 14, and 15 Stonegate. This house, which is now a shop, dates back to the 15th century and was raised, extended, and had a wing added in the late 16th century, with a restoration in the 20th century. The exterior features a three-storey front with three gabled bays and jettied first and second floors, showcasing exposed timber framing. The shopfronts are situated beneath a cased first-floor bressumer, which is framed by plain pilasters with moulded imposts. There is a glazed and panelled door between the left and centre bays, and the windows consist of plate glass with moulded mullions over sunk panel risers. The first and second floor windows are oriels, featuring square and diamond leaded lights. The second floor bressumer is decorated with fretwork, and the gable bargeboards display vines and foliage trails.

Inside, the front range includes a staircase that runs from the cellar to the attic, featuring a close string, bulbous balusters, square newels with attached half balusters and ball finials, as well as a moulded handrail. The timber framing is exposed throughout the first floor. The wing retains a wide fireplace on the ground floor, complete with a massive timber bressumer. A first-floor room is lined with run-through panelling and retains a fireplace surround and overmantel that is intricately carved with fretwork and flowers, with the lintel adorned with a foliage trail. The overmantel panel features a pair of blind arcaded round arches.
