Description
26 and 28 Stonegate is a pair of houses that have been converted into a single shop, dating from around 1797. The building has undergone significant alterations, particularly with the addition of a 20th-century shopfront. The exterior features orange-brown brick in Flemish bond at the front and stretcher bond at the rear, with a timber cornice and shopfront, and brick stacks on a pantile roof.
The building is three stories high with a four-window front. The shopfront includes double doors in the center, flanked by three-light plate glass windows set over raised panel risers. The first-floor windows are one-pane sashes, while the second floor has 20th-century cross-windows. All windows have flat arches made of orange gauged brick and painted sills. The eaves cornice is moulded, dentilled, and modillioned, with inverted bell rainwater heads at each end.
Inside, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) records two original fireplaces on the first floor of No. 28.
