Description
No. 34 Stonegate is a pair of houses that have been converted into a restaurant, dating from around 1730. The building underwent alterations and extensions in the late 19th century, with the shopfront also modified in the 20th century. The front is finished with incised render, while the rear is constructed of orange brick laid in stretcher bond, and the extension features orange brick in English garden-wall bond. The roof is made of pantiles and has a brick stack.
The exterior is three stories tall with a five-window front. The shopfront is framed by sunk-panel pilasters that have foliate scrolled brackets at the top and a modillion cornice. It features a central glazed and panelled door with a semicircular hood supported by foliate brackets and enriched spandrels, flanked by three-light plate glass windows. The upper floors have 12-pane sash windows, which are taller on the first floor, set in raised architraves with painted sills. The second-floor windows are extended on each side as a sill band, and there is a broad band at the second floor. A moulded cornice runs between grooved terminal consoles. At the rear, there is a three-storey wing with a pent roof that has a tripartite window with unequal sashes on the second floor, beneath an eaves course of stepped brick.
The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that there is a staircase in the right part with a closed string, turned balusters, and a panelled dado. The first-floor front room is fully panelled and includes a shelved fireplace cupboard.
