Description
No. 73 Walmgate is a house and shop located in York. The front block dates from the early 16th century, while the rear wing was added around 1700. The front block was raised in the early 19th century, and the shopfront was updated in the late 19th century. The front block is timber-framed, originally featuring wall tile infilling but now refronted in painted brick laid in Flemish bond. The shopfront and eaves cornice are made of timber, while the rear wing is rendered. The roofs are covered with pantiles and feature brick stacks.
The exterior has three storeys and one window. The shopfront includes pilasters with imposts and a dentil cornice supported by paired carved brackets. It features a four-panel front door with an overlight, situated between sunk-panel jambs at the right end. To the right of the plate glass window with a panelled riser is a shop door that is part glazed and part incised panels. The first floor has a 16-pane sash window, and the second floor has an unequal 12-pane sash window. A Yorkshire Fire and Life fire mark dated 1824 is also present.
Inside, the ground floor rooms showcase exposed beams and joists. An open string staircase leads to the first floor, featuring alternately twisted and turned column-on-vase balusters and a ramped-up moulded handrail that sweeps around a column newel on a shaped curtail step. The rear room has a fireplace with a side oven beneath a timber lintel. On the first floor, the front room reveals vestigial timber-framing and wall tile infill, while the rear room has exposed beams and joists, along with a cast-iron fire grate with fluted side pieces in a moulded surround with a shelf. The second floor's front room includes a fire grate adorned with cornucopias of fruit and flowers in a moulded surround with a cornice shelf, and it features a three-panel door.
