Description

75 Walmgate is a building that originally served as shops and offices. It dates back to the 15th century, with wings added in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The building was remodeled in the early 19th century and underwent further alterations in the mid-19th century and the 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure that was originally infilled with wall tiles, but is now rendered at both the front and rear. The shopfront and eaves cornice are made of timber. The front roof is covered with slate and has a hipped right end, while the wings have tile and pantile roofs with brick stacks.

The exterior has a two-storey front with two windows. The right end includes a segmental carriage arch next to a small-pane canted bay window. On the left, the shopfront is framed by pilasters with moulded imposts beneath a moulded cornice supported by grooved brackets. There is a glazed and panelled shop door to the right of an 8-pane sash window above a panelled riser. The first-floor windows are 1-pane sashes with painted stone sills and keyblocks, and there is a modillion eaves cornice beneath later guttering on paired brackets.

Inside, substantial remains of the timber frame are visible on both floors of the front range. The ground floor features a close string staircase with column-on-vase balusters, square newels with attached half balusters, and a moulded handrail. The rear left room has a segment-arched brick fireplace, while the rear right room has a restored cast-iron fireplace with panelled pilaster jambs, a frieze, and a moulded shelf. On the first floor, there are two reset panelled doors in the large front room, and both rear rooms contain cast-iron fireplaces.
