Description

No. 77 Walmgate is a shop and flat that dates back to the 15th century for the cross wing, the 16th century for the hall range, and the early 18th century for the wing. It has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed, originally featuring wall tile infill, with the ground floor rebuilt in orange brick laid in Flemish stretcher bond on a rendered plinth. It has brick stacks and tile roofs.

The exterior showcases a 2-storey, 3-bay front with a jettied first floor and a gabled right bay, with the timber-frame exposed on the first floor. There are glazed and panelled doors beneath moulded cornices flanking two small-pane canted bay windows that have been inserted. The first floor windows consist of 2, 3, and 4 mullioned lights with square lattice casements.

Inside, the ground floor room to the right features run-through wainscot and fielded panels beneath a moulded cornice, along with a bolection moulded fire surround and a panelled overmantel. To the left of the fireplace is a cupboard door with 3 raised and fielded panels on H-L hinges. The room to the left includes chamfered spine beams with ogee stops and a blocked fireplace with a long timber lintel. A reset close string staircase leads to the first floor, featuring column-on-vase balusters, square newels, and a ramped-up moulded handrail.

On the first floor, the timber-frame is exposed in both the hall and the cross wing. The large front room has a fireplace with a bolection moulded surround, a moulded cornice shelf, and a bolection moulded overmantel panel flanked by sunk-panel pilasters beneath a moulded cornice. The fireplace includes a basket grate with side pieces that are moulded with floral drops in oval medallions.
