Description

No. 114 Walmgate is a lodging house, now converted into flats, built around 1890 and restored around 1980. It was designed by WG and AS Penty for The York Coffee House Company. The building is constructed of red brick in English garden-wall bond, featuring moulded brick dressings, a timber entrance screen, and a prominent eaves frieze and cornice made of moulded timber and plaster. The roof is covered with Westmorland slate and has brick cornice stacks.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a five-window front. The central entrance screen is three bays wide and is situated beneath a full-width moulded brick cornice. This entrance features glazed and panelled double doors flanked by cambered-headed plate glass windows, all beneath a full-width moulded transom and small-pane overlights. To the left of the entrance, there are two 18-pane sash windows with moulded sills and cambered arches, while all windows are finished with wrought-iron guards. To the right, a square-headed carriage arch with a dentilled cornice leads to a board gate that includes a band of turned balusters.

On the second floor, the windows are tall 18-pane sashes with moulded stone sills, each topped with alternately triangular and segmental pediments, which are broken by grooved dropped keyblocks capped with ball finials. The gabled half dormers feature 12-pane sash windows with stone sills beneath moulded cornice lintels. Ornate rainwater goods are positioned between the dormers. The interior has not been inspected.
