Description

No. 43 Stonegate is a former house, now a shop, likely dating from the 15th century, with remodels in the late 17th century and a refronting and re-roofing in the late 18th century. The building features timber framing with a plastered front and 18th-century brick at the rear, a timber cornice, and a pantile roof that is hipped at the front and has been reroofed in plain tile, along with brick stacks.

The exterior includes a cellar and three storeys, with a one-bay front where both upper floors jet out. The shopfront has a partially glazed door with a six-pane overlight to the left of a small-pane cantilevered window above an iron cellar grille. The first-floor window is a four-light oriel with paired 12-pane sashes between 8-pane sashes, while the second floor features an oriel with one 12-pane sash flanked by 4-pane sashes. There is a dentilled and moulded cornice above. The left return is partially visible from the second floor of No. 45 and has plaster lined to resemble panelling, along with part of a timber window surround.

Inside, the cellar contains a cooking range in a plain stone fireplace. The ground floor features a splat baluster staircase with square newels and a plain handrail that rises to the second floor, and the front room has a blocked-off corner fireplace. On the first floor, the front room also has a blocked corner fireplace and a reeded plaster ceiling frieze. The second floor landing includes a reset length of arcaded frieze and 17th-century panelled doors, including an attic door on butterfly hinges. The front room on this floor has a plain fireplace with a basket grate, and there are ladder stairs leading to the attic.
