Description
No. 49 Stonegate is a historic building in York that originally served as a house and shop, now functioning as a shop and offices. It dates back to the early 17th century, with extensions made in the early 18th century. The building was refronted and had its roof altered in the early 19th century, and features a later 19th-century shopfront. The structure is timber-framed and faced with orange-grey brick in Flemish bond, with a shopfront that includes some cast-iron elements. The roof is covered with pantiles and is hipped in front of the original gable.
The building stands three storeys tall with an attic and has a one-window front, showcasing a jettied first floor. The shopfront is framed by partly fluted Ionic pilasters beneath a sloped fascia that features the inscription 'HENRY HARDCASTLE estab'd 1770: No.49 Stonegate'. There are double doors with shaped panels beneath a panelled lintel on scroll brackets to the right of a shallow canted bay window, both of which are topped with diamond lattice overlights. The first floor features a bow window with three 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has a single bowed 16-pane sash window. The eaves cornice is moulded and modillioned, returning at both ends.
Inside, the ground floor shop is partly lined with reset 17th-century panelling, some of which is carved. A staircase with a moulded close string, turned balusters, square newels with attached half balusters, and a ramped handrail leads from the ground to the second floor. On the first floor landing, there is a reglazed small-pane sash window set in a round-arched moulded surround, and a moulded round arch on moulded imposts leads to the front rooms. The beams in the front rooms are decorated with plaster fruit and floral trails, and several 17th-century panelled doors remain, some mounted on butterfly hinges.
