Description

No. 83 Low Petergate is a former house, now a shop, dating from around 1600. The building has been altered and the rear was rebuilt in the late 19th century, with further changes made later. It features a timber-framed structure with a stucco front and a brick rear in English garden-wall bond, topped with a pantile roof and a single brick ridge stack.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a three-window gabled front that has jettied first and second floors. The gable is adorned with ornate bargeboards. The shopfront includes a plate glass window above a sunk-panel riser and a glazed shop door on the right. To the left, there is a passage opening beneath a flat lintel. The upper floor windows are 1-pane sashes with painted moulded sills, and the jetty bressumers are boxed and supported by shaped brackets. At the rear, some timber framing is visible, including a full-height post with a tapered head, and the windows are 4-pane sashes.

The interior, which was only inspected on the ground floor, reveals heavy beams and joists that are exposed throughout. The central chimney breast features a fireplace with an exposed timber lintel in the back room. The staircase has a close string, turned balusters, and newels with attached half balusters, as recorded by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
