Description

87 Low Petergate is a Grade II listed building in York, formerly known as No. 51. This structure consists of two shops that were remodeled into one shop in the late 19th century, with further alterations made in the 20th century, including changes to the 19th-century shopfront. The building is entirely timber-framed; the front is covered in stucco with planted framing and features a timber cornice with modillions. The rear has a rendered ground floor and an orange-brown brick first floor laid in stretcher bond, topped by a gable end made of tumbled brick. The roof is covered with pantiles and has a brick chimney stack.

The exterior showcases a three-storey, two-window front with jettied first and second floors. The double shopfront includes paired glazed doors situated between plate glass windows, which are framed by slender Corinthian colonnettes adorned with floral sprays in the spandrels. Above the shopfront, there is a plain fascia on the first-floor jetty, supported by grooved brackets and shaped brackets below. The first-floor windows are canted bays featuring 4:12:4-pane sashes, while the second floor has four Yorkshire sashes with 2x6 panes.

At the rear, there is a two-storey gable wall with an exposed tapered-headed post, braces, and wall plates. Inside both shops, mid-19th-century cooking ranges are present; one, made by J Hardgrave of York, is located on the first floor of the right shop in a plain painted stone surround, while the other is at the rear of the ground floor in the left shop. The right shop also features a staircase balustrade with early 18th-century turned balusters that have been reused, complemented by a 19th-century handrail and newels.
