Description

73, 75, and 77 Low Petergate are three former houses, now shops, located in York. They date from the late 16th century, with later extensions and a conversion to shops in the 19th century, along with further alterations in the 20th century. The buildings are timber-framed and fronted in stucco that is incised to resemble ashlar. They have pantile roofs with gable ends and one brick chimney.

The exterior features a three-storey, four-bay front, with each bay having a gable and the upper floors jettied. No. 73 has a shopfront with plain jambs and a moulded panel frieze beneath a broad bowed fascia. The shop window consists of two lights, positioned to the right of a recessed glazed door with an overlight. On the first floor, there is a 20-pane bow window, and on the second floor, a 16-pane sash window.

No. 75 has a 20th-century shopfront with plain pilasters, imposts, and moulded console brackets beneath a broad fascia board. It features plate glass windows and a glazed and panelled door. The first floor has 2- and 4-light casement windows, while the second floor has two Yorkshire sashes with two panes each.

No. 77 has a 19th-century shopfront with sunk-panel pilasters, imposts, and a plain fascia board. The windows are plate glass above sunk-panel risers on either side of a recessed glazed and panelled door, with a board passage door to the right. The first floor has paired 2-light casements with transoms and a small sash to the right, and on the second floor, there are four 2-pane Yorkshire sashes.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed on the ground floor of Nos. 75 and 77. No. 75 retains a massive chimney breast with two hearths in the rear room.
