Description

71 Low Petergate is a former house and workshop, now a shop, dating from the early 17th century with alterations made in the early 19th century. A workshop extension was added to the rear in the 19th century, and the shopfront was also altered during this time. The building is timber-framed and fronted with painted brick in Flemish bond, featuring a timber shopfront and cornice. It has a hipped pantile roof with a rendered stack.

The exterior consists of a three-storey, one-window front. The shopfront includes a three-light window with transoms and colonnette mullions, and to the left, there is a recessed glazed and panelled door with an overlight. To the right, the original side passage doorway has been altered to a single plate glass window. Above the shopfront is a deep fascia that bows in the center, supporting a shallow tripartite first-floor bowed window with four-pane sashes and a moulded cornice. On the second floor, there are two 16-pane sashes with painted sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. The building features a modillioned eaves cornice.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed in the front part of the building. Towards the rear, there is an elliptical arch on pilasters with imposts, and the ceiling has a moulded cornice along with plaster fruit and flower garlands.
