Description

57 Low Petergate is a house dating from the early 17th century, which was refronted and raised in the early 19th century. The front facing Grape Lane was rebuilt later in the 19th century, and the shopfront was altered in the 19th century as well. The front block is timber-framed and has been refronted in orange-grey brick laid in Flemish bond, with a timber cornice and a pantile roof.

The exterior features a four-storey, one-window front to Low Petergate. The shopfront is framed with plain pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice, and includes plate glass windows over sunk-panel risers and a glazed and panelled corner door. The first-floor window is a 16-pane sash, the second-floor window is a 12-pane sash, and the third-floor window is an unequal 9-pane sash, all with narrow painted sills and channelled lintels.

The Grape Lane front consists of three storeys and an attic with four windows. The shopfront returns at the right end from Low Petergate, while No. 1 Grape Lane has a 20th-century shopfront. The ground-floor window is a 16-pane sash with panelled shutters. The windows on the first and second floors are generally 16-pane sashes with painted stone sills and channelled lintels or cambered brick arches, with 2-light casements inserted on each floor of No. 1 Grape Lane. A dentilled and modillioned cornice from the Low Petergate front returns at the right end, with a plain parapet on the remainder.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate some close framing in the first-floor front room, and on the second floor, there is an exposed post and an axial beam with original attic floor joists pegged to it, along with three early 18th-century doors.
