Description

49 and 51 Low Petergate is a former hotel, now a café, dating from the mid-19th century, which incorporates parts of a medieval structure and has an early 18th-century wing. The building underwent a late 20th-century renovation and features a shopfront. The materials include a medieval timber-framed structure, with the front made of orange brick in Flemish bond, accented by white brick dressings and raised quoins. The early 18th-century wing is constructed of orange-brown brick in stretcher bond, while the 19th-century extension is made of white brick in English garden-wall bond.

The exterior has a four-storey, five-bay front. The shopfront features a modillioned cornice and includes a part-glazed passage door set between sunk-panelled pilasters on the left. To the right of the recessed glazed door is a plate glass window with three unequal lights and 4-centred heads. The first and second floors have 1-pane sash windows, while the third floor has 12-pane sash windows, all with segmental heads beneath 2-centred arches made of orange and white brick. The first-floor windows have a painted stone sill band, and the second and third-floor windows have painted stone sills that extend in white brick to form flat sill bands. The eaves parapet has flat coping and features inset crosses of white brick.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate a 17th-century staircase above the ground floor with bulbous balusters, newels with attached half-balusters, and a moulded handrail. There is also a late 19th-century secondary staircase in the rear wing, along with several 19th-century marble fireplaces, moulded cornices, and panelled doors.
