Description

No. 16, South Street is a house, now a shop and dwelling, with origins in the 17th century and largely dating from the 18th century, incorporating later alterations. The exterior is painted brick, with a hipped roof covered in old plain tiles and a 20th-century chimney stack to the rear. The house is three storeys high, with a three-window front. The upper floors feature late 19th-century plain sash windows set beneath gauged brick flat arches. The windows are arranged as 3/3 sashes. A stone-coped parapet tops the building. The front was altered in the late 19th century with the addition of a shop front to the right, comprising recessed double glazed doors and an overlight, set between display cases. A 20th-century shop front is also present. The shop front is accentuated by a moulded fascia board and a hood with elaborate consoles resting on plain pilasters. The rear elevation displays stick framing and plasterwork, along with timber framing, plaster, and a plain tile roof. The interior of the property was not inspected.
