Description

No. 123 High Street is a house with a shop, featuring a late 18th century front that may incorporate elements from late medieval fabric, remodeled around 1600. The building is constructed with Flemish bond brickwork and timber framing, topped with a tiled roof and brick stacks. The brick frontage has a steeply pitched and lofty roof that is hipped to the left. To the right, there is an entrance court with a 16th century doorway that belongs to the adjoining property, Auriol House. The building has three storeys and an attic, with a two-windowed facade. The windows are 12-pane sashes with V-joint lintels and thin stone cills. The ground floor features a 19th century shop front with a glazed door to the right, set beneath a shallow transom light and a deep fascia. Further to the right is the entrance to the court. The building has a high coped parapet, with stacks located to the left and at the rear gable. The rear is framed with brick nogging and some horizontal boarding, and includes a lower lean-to element also in framing. Inside the throughway, there are deep chamfered beams, and at the back, one beam is cut to a camber and bears the inscription 'DEV:REG:AMIC' ('God, Queen, and Friends'), which relates to Auriol House but is part of the fabric of No. 123. The ground floor interior has a braced framed wall to the left, a compartmental ceiling with chamfered beams, and a stone fireplace dating from around 1606. The upper rooms have not been inspected.
