Description
Nos. 15-17 on Silent Street are two houses that may have originally been part of a longer range, built gable end-on. They date back to the 16th century and feature exterior details from the 18th and 20th centuries. No. 15 is plastered and rendered, while No. 17 has a brick ground floor and a tile-hung first floor, with a jetty. Both houses are two storeys tall with attics and have single window ranges. No. 15 has a ground floor 20th-century tripartite sash window with glazing bars and a first floor 20th-century sash window with glazing bars. No. 17 features one ground and one first floor sash window with glazing bars, along with a two-light sliding casement dormer window. The entrance has a raised and fielded panel door with an upper glazed panel. The tiled roof has a central stack, and the gable at the west end has been rebuilt.
Inside, No. 15 has a ground floor longitudinal spine beam with the original wall plate, and the second floor has an inserted wall plate with studding that shows the roof heightening. There is close-set studding and thick joists visible throughout, along with one first floor matrix of an original wooden mullion window. No. 17 has a more substantially surviving frame, with a jettied first floor, studding, one passing brace, and a five-light diamond section mullion window with two surviving mullions. The rear wall has three wattle and daub panels. The original roof has been heightened with extra studding and a new wall plate, and the original stack has been replaced above ridge level.
