Description

Nos. 30 and 32 South Street are two adjoining houses that were formerly one farmhouse, dating from the 16th century or earlier. No. 30 features heavy render, while No. 32 has roughcast render. The buildings are constructed of rubble and cob with a pantiled roof that has a gable end on the right and is hipped to the left. There is a rubble and brick stack at the left end and a large lateral stack at the front, which has offsets and an extended tapered cap.

The original layout may have been a three-cell plan, but the internal divisions have been significantly altered. The houses are two storeys high with a five-window range. No. 30 has a 20th-century door to the left of the stack, along with a 20th-century casement and a three-light casement (with four panes in each light) above two timber sashes that have marginal glazing bars on the right. No. 32 features two two-light casements, with the one on the right inserted into a former larger opening above a sash that has marginal glazing bars on each side of a 20th-century half-glazed door.

An interesting feature of the buildings is the four-stage roof structure, which includes a smoke-blackened truss with heavy straight principals, threaded purlins, and a ridge purlin over what was once an open hall. This area has been later enclosed with a lath and plaster partition to create a dividing wall between the two dwellings. At the upper end, there are three trusses from the 18th century made of light scantling, while two further replacements from the 19th century bear carpenter's marks. The entire roof structure was raised in the 20th century to create a continuous roof line. There is a plain moulded cornice in the chamber above the hall, but otherwise, the interior has been much altered.
