Description
Capern House is a house built around 1830-1840, constructed from rendered rubble with some brick and cob at the rear. It features a slate roof with gable end stacks and has a central staircase plan. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range of sash windows, each with two panes over two panes and marginal glazing bars. This is flanked by two similar sashes on either side of a short projecting porch supported by Ionic fluted columns and an entablature. The entrance has a panelled door made up of two tall panels with semi-circular heads and an overlight with marginal glazing bars. At the rear, there is a round-arched stair window. Capern House was the retirement home of Edward Capern, the postman-poet, whose gravestone can be found in Heanton Punchardon graveyard.
