Description
Caen Primary School, originally known as the County Primary School, was built in 1873 and later enlarged with rear extensions in the same gothic style in 1883 and 1896, as indicated by the spaced lead rainwater heads. The building is constructed of squared rubble with dressed stone surrounds at the openings. It features slate roofs adorned with crested tiles and small gabletted stacks. The L-shaped facade includes three gable-ended projections with short flanking buttresses topped with ashlar caps. The outer wings have large single windows consisting of four lancet lights, with the two central lights rising above the outer lights in pointed arch surrounds. The central projection has two 2-light lancets. Above the entrance, there is a plaque inscribed with "Board Schools 1873." The gable bellcote has gabled pointed arch openings and corner pinnacles surrounding a small stone spire. Each recess between the wings contains 2-leaved plank doors flanked by windows. The left door projects further forward with a flat roof, while the right has a 2-light tilting casement above in a gabled dormer with a slate roof and slated gable end.
