Description
Merriott First School is a school building constructed in 1876, with an extension added around 1900. It is built from ham stone ashlar and features plain clay tiled roofs with bands of scallop tiles, along with coped gables that have gabletted finials. The original section from 1875 includes wrought-iron finials. The building is a single-storey structure with a double roof plan and projections on the east side, designed in the High Victorian gothic style.
The north elevation, which faces the road, has three bays. The first bay is the side of a projection, while the second and third bays are gabled. The first bay features a three-light plain mullioned window. The second bay has a five-light pointed-arched window with unmoulded sub-arcuated plate tracery beneath a pointed-arched label, and a two-aperture vent in the gable. The third bay contains a segmental-arched double-transomed three-light window with a string course above.
The east elevation also consists of three bays. The first bay has a plain three-light window. The second bay is a projecting porch with a catslide roof and a bell turret on the gable. The third bay, which has a full gable, features a three-light plate-traceried window without a label. There is a small extension on the south side that is set lower than the main structure.
Originally established as an infants Board school following the formation of a School Board in 1875, Merriott First School merged with the Former Sunday School across the street in 1972.
