Description
The former Anglican Sunday School, built in 1834, is now part of Merriott First School. It is constructed from ham stone rubble, with gables and dressings made of ashlar, and features a Welsh slate roof between stepped coped gables topped with cross finials and metal ventilators along the ridge. The building is single-storey and consists of five bays.
The west elevation has hollow-chamfered mullioned windows that are two-light with segmental arched heads and incised spandrils, all set beneath square labels. The central bay contains an elliptical-arched recess under a square label, featuring a pair of studded and boarded doors that are accessed by a flight of six stone steps with a wrought-iron handrail. Above the doorway is a plaque that reads, "Redeem thy Creator in the days of thy youth - Ecc 12."
There is an extension on the north gable behind a wing wall, which has a plain doorway. The south gable features a high-set, four-light transomed window with a plaque above that states "Merriott Sunday School 1834." The east elevation mirrors the west, but the central bay has a taller window with a transom, with the head set into a gable. The interior has not been seen but is reportedly little altered.
By 1861, the building was being used as a National Day School, and in 1875/6 it became a mixed Board school after the construction of the Infants Board school across the road. Both schools merged to form Merriott First School in 1972.
