Description
The King's Head Inn is an inn dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings and features a double Roman clay tiled roof. The roof has a high coped gable on the west side, indicating it may have originally been thatched, while the east side is plain. There are brick chimney stacks at either end. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. It has a plinth and a band course. The windows are hollow-chamfered mullioned types set in chamfered recesses without labels. The first bay features a 1 + 4 + 1 light angled shallow bay window with a flat roof, the second bay has 4-light windows on both floors, and the third bay has horizontal-bar casements, with three lights above and four lights below. There is a plain doorway between the second and third bays. A large hanging sign is mounted on a wrought iron bracket to the left of the upper first bay. The west gable is rendered, while the east gable has a 20th-century casement window. At the rear, there is a lean-to extension. The interior, which has only been seen at ground floor level, retains timber crossbeams and a fireplace. The inn was in operation by 1745.
