Description
Laurel Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 16th century, with reshaping that occurred in the early 18th century. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone, featuring ashlar dressings, and has a thatched roof between coped gables, with brick end chimney stacks. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall with three bays. All windows are three-light horizontal-bar casements with timber lintels, except for the third bay on the ground floor, which has a three-light hollow-chamfer mullioned window set in a chamfered recess with a label. Between the second and third bays, there is a six-panel door hung on a medium frame in a plain opening, sheltered by a timber and slated hood. A single-light window with a chamfered surround has been inserted to the left of this door. Additional casement windows are located in the south gable. At the rear, there is a door with a heavy timber shouldered-head frame. Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to have a cross-passage plan and has undergone alterations. However, chamfered crossbeams with simple run-out stops remain, and the roof frame includes an adapted jointed cruck and a closed post-and-truss structure with a cambered collar.
