Description

Shiremoor House is a detached house dating from the 17th century, with modifications from the 18th century. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar and near-ashlar, featuring Welsh slate between tall coped gables that suggest it may have originally had a thatched roof. The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of three bays. The windows are mostly hollow-chamfered mullioned types set in chamfered recesses. The first-floor bays one and three have three lights without labels, while the ground floor bay two has a four-light window and bay three has a three-light window, both with labels. The first-floor bay two features a two-light ovolo-mould mullioned window in a wave-mould recess without a label, and the lower windows are rectangular-leaded.

On the ground floor, bay two includes a wide part-glazed late 19th-century door, which is set into an open stone porch supported by Doric columns and pilasters, topped with a plain full entablature and a flat roof. Attached to the south gable is a single-bay extension that is set lower, featuring a casement window above and a 20th-century mullioned window with a label below. Although the interior has not been seen, it has been reported to include a wide cross passage, formerly with a stair, several beams with slight chamfers, an old external door in the rear extension, and tie beam roof trusses.
