Description

Highway Cottage is a semi-detached cottage with origins dating back to around 1600, though it has been modified over the years. It is constructed from local stone rubble and is colourwashed, topped with a thatched roof featuring a stepped coped gable on the south side and a half-hipped roof on the north. The cottage has two storeys and displays irregular fenestration across its two bays. The ground floor features small casement windows, with a three-light window in bay one that has a keystoned lintel, and a timber lintel in bay two. The first floor has a two-light window that cuts into the thatch. Between the bays, there is a 19th-century door in a plain opening, which is protected by a rustic timber and hipped thatched porch. Some exposed timbers can be seen alongside the upper windows, and there is an additional small casement window in the west gable.

While the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a three-room cross-passage plan, with the main fireplace located in the hall, a timber-framed chimney, and collar trusses with some frame filling. Attached to the northwest corner and set at right angles is a 19th-century cottage, which appears to have been incorporated to form one house.
