Description

The Old Rectory is a detached cottage built in the 16th century and later. It is constructed from local grey lias stone that is roughly cut and squared, topped with a thatched roof that features coped gables and brick chimney stacks at the ends and in the middle. The building has an L-shaped plan and is a single storey with attics, comprising three bays.

The windows are horizontal bar casements with two and three lights of various types, set beneath exposed timber lintels. In the upper bay two, there is a window cut into the thatch. Between bays two and three, there is a plain boarded door with a glazed toplight, also under a timber lintel.

Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to have a cross-passage plan. Notable internal features include chamfered beams with shallow steps and run-outs, and a four-panel ceiling in the west room, where the central transverse beam is ovolo-moulded. There is an in-and-out plank partition to the hall with bead moulding, as well as a stud and plank partition. Two first-floor rooms have small ribbed plaster cornices, and there is a spiral staircase near the rear hall door. The rear wing features an ovolo-moulded doorway with a cambered arch and a former oven in the north gable. The roof contains three jointed cruck trusses, which are blackened, with one windbrace still in place, and 17th-century collar beam trusses over the parlour and return wing.
