Description
This building is a house that was formerly the Church of St John Baptist. It has origins dating back to the 13th century and was converted into a house in the 1970s. The structure is made of local grey lias stone that has been cut and squared, with Doulting stone dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof over stone slate base courses, with coped gables and a cross finial at the east end. The base of a bell turret, which once held two bells, is located on the west side, along with a stone chimney stack.
The house has a single-cell plan consisting of five bays, with no external distinction between the nave and chancel. On the south elevation, there are four single light cusped windows set in ogee-mould recesses, lacking labels. In the second bay, there is a projecting gabled porch that contains a semi-circular arched doorway with a boarded door featuring an inserted light. Inside the porch, there is a chamfered pointed arched doorway and a small canopied statue niche in the east wall. Between the fourth and fifth bays, there is a narrow moulded pointed arched doorway, above which is a modern two-light window in a gabled dormer.
The west wall features a large pointed arch with curtain walling, which has been infilled with French doors. The east window consists of three lancets with a trifle arched label that has plain stops, flanked by two small 20th-century circular windows. The north wall has similar details to the south wall, minus the porch. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted that there is a survival of a ribbed barrel vault ceiling. The conversion from church to house has been carried out without significantly altering the building's special interest on the exterior.
