Description

Milestone located on the east side of Fosse Way in Lydford-on-Fosse, dating from the early 19th century and associated with the Ilchester Turnpike Trust. It is made of low dressed stone and has a flat top, roughly triangular in shape. On the west side, there is a cast-iron plaque with raised lettering that reads: "9 SHEPTON MALLET ILCHESTER 6". The rear of the milestone features further remains of incised lettering that says "CANNARDS GRAVE", indicating that the stone pier has been reused. The Ilchester Turnpike Trust was established in 1753.
