Description
The milestone south of Parbury Cottage is a late 18th century or early 19th century structure, rectangular in shape with a rounded top. Made of dressed stone, it features a cast iron plaque shaped like a three-pointed shield attached to the front (east face). The plaque has incised lettering that reads: FROME 1.
This milestone is part of a series erected by the Frome Turnpike Trust along the route between Frome and Radstock, which was turnpiked in 1757. It is recognized as a Grade II listed structure because it is a clear and well-preserved example of a milestone from this period, illustrating the development of the road network influenced by the 1773 general Turnpike Act. It is similar to other listed milestones placed along this route by the Frome Turnpike Trust.
