Description
This is an early 19th-century milestone situated within a front boundary wall, located on Langport Road in Long Sutton. The milestone consists of a ham stone pillar, partially buried by the pavement and incorporated into the base of a garden wall; the visible section measures 375 millimetres wide and 330 millimetres high. It bears a cast iron plaque that is 375 millimetres wide and 150 millimetres deep. The plaque has semi-circular additions, each 150 millimetres in diameter, at the top and bottom. The plaque is inscribed “3/LANGPORT/ILCHESTER 5 1/2”. The milestone relates to the Langport, Somerton and Castle Cary Trust, which maintained the turnpike road from 1792.
