Description

This is a milestone set into the front boundary wall of Hillhead Cottage, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of Ham stone and features a cast iron plaque that is now embedded in a lias stone rubble wall. The pillar stands about one metre high and 400 millimetres wide, while the plaque measures approximately 400 millimetres by 125 millimetres deep, with semi-circular projections at the top and bottom. A small portion of the right-hand side of the plaque is missing, and it reads "5/Langport/Castle Cary/10". This road was maintained by the Langport, Somerton, and Castle Cary Trust starting in 1753.
