Description

ST41NE MARTOCK CP 6/164 Milestone at NGR ST 4737 1837 II

Milestone. Early C19. Ham stone pillar, trapezoid plan 500mm down to 200mm wide, 250mm thick, 1.1 m high, flat top. Set in is a cast-iron plaque 365mm wide x 300mm high overall, the top shouldered and segmental, the bottom a double cyma-recta curve, and reads 'ILCHESTER/4'. This road turnpiked by the Ilchester Trust in 1753. (Bentley J.B and Murless B.J, Somerset Roads, Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society, 1985).
