Description

ST41NE STOKE SUB HAMDON CP WEST STREET (South side) 2/342 Milestone at NGR ST 4637 1687 - - II Milestone. Early C19 probably. Ham stone pillar, cast iron plaque. Pillar triangular on plan, about 475 mm wide on principal faces and 350mm wide at back, about 850mm high, with slightly segmental top: plaques 420m and 360mm long, 100mm deep, with curved drop under, reading "YEOVIL 6 and a half" on west side and ILMINSTER 7" on east. This road was one of the original roads administered by the Ilminster Trust, set up in 1759, and was turnpiked in that year (Bentley J B and Murless B J, Somerset Roads, SIAS, 1985).
